SAY: DC
Join the SAY: DC community, our free weekly creative arts program offered throughout the school year in Washington, DC, where young people who stutter are supported and encouraged to find their voice. Through the power of listening, artmaking, and connection, participants ages 5-18 come together to create a community of fun, creativity, and imagination.
SAY: DC programs are powered by listening, creative expression, and community building, introducing new worlds of possibility for every participant. For more than 20 years, our approach has been rooted in the belief that every young person has an important story to tell and the ability to share it with the world in their own unique and powerful way.
Central to our mission is the removal of all financial barriers to attendance. We are pleased to provide our award-winning programming completely free of charge, including all project materials!
We meet every Saturday (except holidays), from 10 am-12 noon at the SAY: DC Studio on Rhode Island Avenue NW. Three 8-week sessions are offered throughout the year, and young people ages 5-18 who stutter are welcome to participate 100% free of charge!

A Creative Community + A Common Bond
Underlying everything we do is the Camp SAY “cabin effect”— the transformative experience of being part of a tight-knit team—a diverse group that shares the commonality of being young people who stutter.
At our Saturday morning clubhouse gatherings, we come together to create a community of fun, support, creativity, and imagination. Guided by SAY: DC Co-Founder Leigh Pennebaker and a team of accomplished Teaching Artists, young adventurers are provided with all they need to make art, cultivate friendships, and build their confidence.
Projects throughout the year incorporate creative writing, printmaking, sculpture, painting, mixed-media, drawing, creative movement, games, textile art, jewelry-making, acting, and improvisation.
Our mixed-age group allows for a wide range of mentorships and collaborations. Every season, each cohort becomes a group of friends that feels like family and knows how to listen to and support each other. Our creative year will lead to an opportunity to share what we have done with the rest of the SAY: DC community, family, and friends.
Upcoming Dates and Times
SAY: DC weekly gatherings are held every Saturday (excluding holidays), from 10 a.m. to Noon.
“Through SAY, we’ve watched Lucas grow in confidence and self-advocacy. This community has reinforced that every voice deserves to be heard and valued. SAY has strengthened not only Lucas’ belief in himself, but our family’s commitment to ensuring that children who stutter have the opportunity to speak boldly and live fully.”
